Public Works Inspector

Performs inspections on various public works construction projects to ensure safety and compliance with codes and regulations, plans and specifications, and policy and program requirements. Responds to and investigates complaints and enforces municipal code provisions.


Inspects construction sites, materials, and methods for conformance with plans, specifications, municipal code requirements and safety laws.
Reviews plans and specifications in connection with construction and code requirements and recommends changes, as necessary.
Maintains records of work in progress and submits progress reports.
Collects and maintains records for review and preparation of cost/progress estimates of construction projects. Prepares periodic estimates for partial payments to contractors.
Solicits informal bids from contractors and suppliers for public works installations.
Inspects work of contractors and utility companies to ensure compliance with permit terms and conditions regarding sidewalk, driveway and street improvements; street repair; lighting and accessibility improvements; tree removal; house removal; street use, pedestrian barricades, and storage of construction materials and equipment on public property.
Investigates complaints, determines repairs or construction needed, and performs cost calculations to remedy problems.
Performs inspection and code enforcement of news racks, weeds/debris on private property, obstruction of public right of way, illegal dumping, abandoned vehicles, and encroachment of public property.
Issues notices regarding safety concerns, debris on public property, and replacement or repair of damaged public facilities to property and business owners.
Maintains accurate records of properties requiring weed abatement or sidewalk repair and prepares documentation to enforce applicable municipal codes and ordinances and assess charges to property owners.
Prepares and maintains reports, correspondence and various written materials for publication and posting.

Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of:

Construction inspection techniques and methods.
Materials and equipment used in maintenance and construction activities.
Methods of repairing and maintaining asphalt, concrete and other appurtenant materials.
Safety standards and safe work practices.
Mathematical principles including algebra and geometry.
Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations.
Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to:

Read and understand engineering and architectural plans and specifications.
Interpret and enforce state regulations and municipal codes and ordinances.
Learn and use required software applications.
Prepare clear and concise written reports.

Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Successful completion of 30 semester units or the equivalent of college level coursework in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or Technology, or a closely related field.
Three years of recent, paid work experience inspecting public works construction projects and/or performing general construction work inspections. Additional recent, related work experience may substitute for the educational requirement (30 semester units or the equivalent is equal to one year of the required work experience).
Recent municipal inspection experience or related public sector work experience is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid class C driver license
