It’s never too late nor too early to learn your history. One month before the country celebrates the re-election of its first black president, and two months before it marks Black History Month on its national calendar, the LA Urban League takes a moment to celebrate its own “90 plus year milestone of serving the city of Los Angeles” with a wonderful exhibit now showing at the African American Art Museum. It’s called “The 90 That Built LA.”
Co-sponsored by Time Warner Cable, the exhibit chronicles and honors 90 individuals that proudly represent change and equality for almost the last century in the city of Angels. It includes artwork and personal artifacts from luminaries in entertainment, sports, politics, community activism, and economic development. Relevant Content Media owner, Daven Baptiste curated the exhibit.
Amid the excited large crowd at the recent exhibit opening, some of the honorees gladly took pictures and shared their individual contributions with inquisitive guests. Famed local philanthropists, Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, publisher Danny Bakewell Sr., actress Vanessa Bell Calloway, and many relatives of the LA Urban Leagues’ 90 honorees were among the attendees.
Some of the other notable exhibit honorees include Kwanzaa founder, Dr. Maulana Karenga, director and choreographer, Debbie Allen, former mayor, Tom Bradley, “Soul Train’s” Don Cornelius, Earvin “Magic Johnson, and community organizers Cesar Chavez and “Sweet” Alice Harris.
So what makes this exhibit so unique? It’s a great representation of the rich history of Los Angeles expressed through art, photo, and personal heirlooms. Whether a long time resident or recent import, visitors will undoubtedly learn something about this large, culturally diverse city and its people they didn’t know. The exhibit will run at the African-American Art Museum, December 13-March 7th.
Now enjoy some photos from my recent experience at the exhibit’s opening night event and consider gifting yourself and your family this holiday season with the gift of knowledge by visiting the LA Urban League’s “The 90 That Built LA.”
