Every March healthcare professionals around the country recognize Colon Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to spreading information about the importance of colon cancer screening. Payman Khorrami, MD, a board-certified gastroenterologist at La Peer Health Systems in Los Angeles sees patients at the Colonoscopy Center of Excellence, a division of La Peer Health Systems that strongly supports Colon Cancer Awareness.

“Colon Cancer Awareness month is important because it reminds people that proper colon cancer screening saves lives,” said Dr. Khorrami.

Payman Khorrami, MD, a gastroenterologist in Beverly Hills discusses the importance of Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

It is estimated that around 140,000 new patients are diagnosed with colon cancer every year, and 50,000 patients die from colon cancer every year. This makes it the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

“Some people think that colon cancer only affects men,” said Dr. Khorrami,” but in fact, that isn’t true. Women are also at risk and should be screened.”

The current guidelines suggest that those who are 50 or older get screened. African Americans should be screened at 45 and those with a family history should be screened ten years in advance of the age their family member was diagnosed. Colon cancer screening works by identifying colon polyps and removing them before they potentially turn cancerous.

“I urge everyone to take time during Colon Cancer Awareness month to get screened and remind friends and loved ones to do so as well,” said Dr. Khorrami. “Screening can help prevent colon cancer and lead to early detection, which improves the odds of survival.”
