(BLACK PR WIRE) – Atlanta, GA – Lyme Survivor Awareness Network (LSAN) Founder Rosa L. NeSmith highlights the difficulty of being diagnosed with Lyme disease in her book, A Race Against Time: Living With Lyme (A Near Death Experience From a Tick). Her ordeal began unremarkably with a bite from an infected tick while working in her garden. Soon she began experiencing severe medical problems, and doctors could not provide her with any satisfactory answers. Ms. NeSmith confronted her own mortality due to her ignorance of Lyme disease. Sadly, over a four-year period, 15 doctors were also clueless in diagnosing the prolonged clinical symptoms.

Lyme disease is a serious bacterial infection transmitted by infected ticks. The tick is barely visible to the naked eye and destroys the body’s internal organs when left untreated. There is a gap in the national Lyme disease debate between the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS). The IDSA believes Lyme is treated and cured within three weeks (non-chronic). The ILADS state Lyme disease does exist beyond three weeks (chronic) and they have collaborating research and countless sick patients to support their position. Where are the mainstream doctors that are skilled in diagnosing Lyme disease?

LSAN demands federal intervention and oversight of medical legislation in order to close the gap. The mission of LSAN is to donate to Lyme disease research and to promote increased national awareness to patient-consumers by highlighting the difficulty in getting diagnosed. The network inspires the nation to: Take the time…Tell three people about Lyme!

LSAN is a national nonprofit organization which values a community where there is no human suffering from Lyme disease. Ms. NeSmith, the Founder, lost her Allstate Insurance Agency to the difficulty in getting diagnosed with Lyme disease. In effort to help LSAN increase national awareness of Lyme disease, Ms. NeSmith has exposed her private life in a recently published memoir that readers are raving about, entitled: A Race Against Time: Living With Lyme (A Near Death Experience From a Tick).
- Study Presented at DDW® 2013 Finds Dramatic Changes -

(BLACK PR WIRE) – Orlando, FL (May 18, 2013) — Research presented at this year’s Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) features new data on gut bacteria and colorectal cancer risk in African Americans. Researchers found a dramatic and rapid shift in gut microbiota after switching the diet in healthy subjects from a traditional Western diet to a Zulu African diet and vice-versa. Funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, the study’s results might explain levels of colorectal cancer risk.

“African Americans have the highest colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates of all racial groups in the U.S. The reasons for this are not yet understood,” said Franck Carbonero, postdoctoral research associate at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “Our findings offer insight into this disparity and pave the way for new research.”

Researchers fed 20 Zulu Africans 600 grams of meat per day for two weeks and fed 20 African Americans in Pittsburgh a traditional Zulu diet comprised primarily of a corn-based porridge called putu. Comparing stool samples before and after the diet exchange in each case, researchers found dramatic changes in colonic microbiota.

“Our results show that the human colonic microbiota is shaped by diet in a very dynamic manner,” said Rex Gaskins, PhD, professor of Immunobiology at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “Not only that, we observed alterations in the balance of beneficial and detrimental microbial groups, which may explain, in part, the increase in colorectal cancer risk that is conferred by a Western diet.”

Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) is the largest international gathering of physicians, researchers and academics in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery. Jointly sponsored by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), DDW takes place May 18 to 21, 2013, at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL. The meeting showcases more than 5,000 abstracts and hundreds of lectures on the latest advances in GI research, medicine and technology. More information can be found at www.ddw.org.

Flypoet Brings Its Internationally Renowned Spoken Word & Music Showcase to Hollywood for its 3rd Annual Flypoet Under the Stars: Summer Classic at The Ford Amphitheatre

(Hollywood, CA) May 16, 2013 – Call it high energy; call it culturally evolved; call it a sell-out show; just don’t call it an open mic! When Flypoet sold out the Ford Theatre for its first under the stars summer classic experience in 2011, it unleashed a groundbreaking event which rocked the Los Angeles cultural scene and created word-of-mouth buzz. This July, Flypoet will once again place it’s magical mix under the summer night sky. This special event will feature a fully curated, who’s who of the international spoken word scene and an eclectic mix of highly polished musical acts against a backdrop of live performance painting by the incomparable Norton Wisdom. Confirmed spoken word artists include Sekou Andrews, Steven Connell, M’reld Green, Queen Sheba and Javon Johnson.

“Flypoet takes spoken word so far beyond the concept of coffee house open mics that even people familiar with spoken word are usually in awe of what we do,” says John Hensley, creator of Flypoet. “The previous two years we had amazing performers such as Lalah Hathaway, Angie Stone and Kenny Lattimore to spice things up musically, but even with all the buzz, attention and sold out crowds, folks still had no idea just how magical the night was going to be. We’re excited to be doing it again and are creating a line-up that will be sure to keep everyone severely entertained!”

Since 2001 Flypoet has been widely regarded as the hottest, on-going spoken word venue in the country… some say, in the world! The Flypoet Showcase has been on a monthly mission to rock Los Angeles to its cultural core by bringing the world’s most sought after spoken word artists, adding in the hottest signed and unsigned musical acts and topping it all off with unparalleled performance art. For the July show at the Ford Amphitheatre, Flypoet has packaged a high energy event with a multi-cultural appeal that will feed the expectations of regulars and blow away first timers!

“We’ve been raising the bar on the international spoken word scene for more than 10 years… and we’re about to outdo ourselves on July 6th” says John Hensley, creator of Flypoet.

Being surrounded by the some of the best entertainers to date, Jason learned some of the most intricate works of the industry and found himself even more intrigued and driven in his goal of stardom.

Weaver got his break in acting as a kid named Ernie, in the movie, “The Kid Who Loved Christmas.” By the age of 12, Jason had appeared in two other projects; The Long Walk Home, a film by Whoopi Goldberg, and “Brewster’s Place,” a television series produced by Oprah Winfrey. Having been successful in his previous three roles, it was imminent that this young man’s career would be of legendary status. In 1992, Weaver landed the role of a lifetime. He was cast to play the young and most talented Michael Jackson in the small screen film, “The Jackson’s: An American Dream.” This made for television movie garnered him raved reviews and proved to be a launching pad for other areas of his career.

1993 branded Weaver in one of the two most notable roles of his career. Playing alongside Brandy in the television series “Thea,” Jason continued his acting success until the abrupt cancellation of the show later that year. Weaver landed a role in one of the top Disney film’s in 1994. Jason was blessed with the opportunity to display his other talent; singing. He graced us with his passionate sound as the singing voice of Simba in the box office hit, The Lion King.
After a two-year hiatus, Jason was back at it with a role in the civil rights movie, Freedom Song, starring Danny Glover and Loretta Divine. The turn of the millennium also brought about a huge turn in Weaver’s career. In 2002, he enjoyed a highly successful role as “Earnest” in the mega hit movie Drumline, opposite Nick Cannon. The movie was set in Jason’s hometown of Atlanta. After releasing only one of his two albums with Motown in the early 90s, Weaver enjoyed short lived success from “Love Ambition.” He has since refocused his energy and dedication to long hours in the studio in pursuit of his musical dreams. The 2004 hit, “One Call Away” by Chingy, featured a rejuvenated Weaver singing the hook. This single topped the Billboard 100 chart at #2 in the U.S and #26 in the UK.
(BPRW) Michelle Thornhill Named Strategy and Integration Manager for Wells Fargo Enterprise Diversity and Inclusion

(BLACK PR WIRE) – Charlotte, May 15, 2013 – Wells Fargo recently named Michelle Thornhill, senior vice president, as strategy and integration manager reporting directly to the head of Enterprise Diversity and Inclusion. For the last five years, Thornhill served as the African American segment manager at Wells Fargo. In this role, she led the development and execution of the enterprise marketing and engagement strategy for African American consumers and communities.

As Strategy and Integration Manager, Thornhill is now responsible for providing strategic leadership consultation in support of Wells Fargo’s diversity and inclusion business goals and objectives. Thornhill will focus on developing the enterprise-wide diversity and inclusion implementation strategy. As the central facilitator of strategic planning and coordination for this area, her role involves partnering with Wells Fargo leaders and key stakeholder groups to support them in their efforts to strengthen and sustain an inclusive culture for Wells Fargo.

“Michelle’s commitment to diversity and inclusion has proven to be a great asset for Wells Fargo,” says Jimmie Paschall, head of Enterprise Diversity and Inclusion, Wells Fargo. “Diversity and inclusion is not only about acquiring diverse talent, but also developing and promoting diverse talent from within. We look forward to the work Michelle will do in supporting what we consider a business imperative.”

Wells Fargo ultimately aims to become known as one of the world’s greatest companies, a goal of which Thornhill feels requires a solid foundation around a common diversity and inclusion strategy.

Thornhill brings more than fifteen years of experience developing consumer initiatives for diverse audiences in the financial services and nonprofit sectors, and has traveled both domestically and internationally in support of these goals. Her educational credentials blend finance and public policy with a Bachelor of Science in Financial Management from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a Masters of Science in Organizational Behavior and Culture from Central Michigan University and a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University, the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

As a mother of two young boys, Thornhill is extremely passionate about education and serves as a co-chair of the advisory board for New Leaders of Charlotte. She believes that all children should have access to a quality education and considers it a personal priority to play her part.

LOS ANGELES — Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today filed an enforcement action against JPMorgan Chase & Co. (Chase) alleging that the bank engaged in fraudulent and unlawful debt-collection practices against tens of thousands of Californians.

The suit alleges that Chase engaged in widespread, illegal robo-signing, among other unlawful practices, to commit debt-collection abuses against approximately 100,000 California credit card borrowers over at least a three-year period.

“Chase abused the judicial process and engaged in serious misconduct against California credit card borrowers,” Attorney General Harris said. “This enforcement action seeks to hold Chase accountable for systematically using illegal tactics to flood California’s courts with specious lawsuits against consumers. My office will demand a permanent halt to these practices and redress for borrowers who have been harmed.”

From January 2008 through April 2011, Chase filed thousands of debt collection lawsuits every month in the State of California. On one day alone, Chase filed 469 such lawsuits in California. The Attorney General’s complaint against Chase alleges that, to maintain this pace, Chase employed unlawful practices as shortcuts to obtain judgments against California consumers with speed and ease that could not have been possible if Chase had adhered to the minimum substantive and procedural protections required by law.

“At nearly every stage of the collection process, Defendants cut corners in the name of speed, cost savings, and their own convenience, providing only the thinnest veneer of legitimacy to their lawsuits,” the complaint states.

Chase used California’s judicial system as a mill to obtain default judgments, the suit alleges, using illegal tactics to flood the state’s court system in order to secure default judgments and garnish wages from Californians.

The alleged misconduct includes:

Robo-signing: Chase illegally robo-signed various litigation filings, including sworn documents, declarations, and verified complaints, without reviewing the relevant files or bank records or even reading the documents before signing.

“Sewer Service”: Chase failed to properly serve notice of debt collection lawsuits against consumers while claiming they had been served as required by law. This practice, known as “sewer service,” deprives the consumer of any notice of the lawsuit.

Filing Irregularities: Chase haphazardly assembled its official legal filings. For example, Chase failed to redact consumers’ personal information in attachments to filings, potentially exposing them to identity theft and in violation of California law. In addition, when asking courts to enter default judgments against consumers, Chase consistently swore under penalty of perjury that the consumers were not on active military duty. In fact, Chase never checked. This deprived servicemembers of important legal protections to which they are entitled while on active duty.

The suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and a copy of the complaint is attached to the online version of this release at http://oag.ca.gov/.

Consumers who believe they have been victims of this misconduct may submit a complaint online at http://oag.ca.gov/consumers.
